Learn About Projectors

The use of visual information in a presentation was once a burdensome task requiring advanced preparation of slides, overhead projector materials, and projection system availability at a venue. Not any more.

Advances in projector image and information processing technologies have led to the manufacture of powerful portable business and home theater projector systems. These projectors are easy to transport and operate, and that can use electronically stored information, even motion-picture video, for impressive, effective business presentations and home theater use.

Here, we'll introduce you to the basic business and home theater projector technologies that make up our portable projector lineup, suggest some example uses, and explain some of the features that you might want to consider when purchasing a projector.

Basic Projector Technology - How Projectors Work

The operation of today's business and home theater projector systems is based on receiving an electric signal (either analog or digital) from a data source (computer, VCR, DVD, etc.) transforming the signal into an image, and projecting the image onto a screen. To do this, the signal must first be converted into a digital signal. If sent as analog, it is passed through an analog-to-digital signal converter. The digital signal is now ready to be processed into an image for projection. Currently, there are two technologies used in business and home theater projectors to display images: liquid-crystal display (LCD Projector) and Digital Light Processing (DLP Projector).

LCD Projector

Here, the digital signal is processed to polysilicon panels. A light source is passed through a series of dichroic mirrors to separate the various color wavelengths and then through the polysilicon panels where activated pixels process the light into a final compiler before projection through the lens and onto the screen.

DLP Projector

Here, the digital signal is processed to a DMDT chip. The light source is passed through a color wheel and onto the DMDT chip, and is then reflected off the chip through the lens and onto the screen. The introduction of this rather new technology has led to the further miniaturization of business and home theater projector systems.

Advances in circuitry miniaturization have enabled business and home theater projector systems to grow increasingly smaller in size while maintaining the power and performance of their predecessors. The current technological breakthroughs in the projector industry are paving the way for even smaller, lighter projector models with true mobility that allows one to use virtually any location as a presentation venue.

Features to Consider When Buying a Projector - What's Best for You?

The projector's size and weight are important. But there are other items you should consider when selecting the best portable business or home theater projector for you needs. These projector features include sufficient image brightness (ANSI lumen rating), connectivity (single or multiple data source ports) and functions incorporated for improved performance and operation ease. Once you know the degree of mobility and level of performance required for your presentation needs, the decision as to which projector is best for you is easy.
