Monster Cable Changes Name to Monster

After 32 years, Monster Cable Products Inc. officially changes name to Monster Inc.

After 32 years, Monster Cable Products, Inc. has officially changed its name to Monster.

The name change reflects the continuing evolution and diversification of Monster’s expanding product categories.

“I founded Monster to make music sound better. We did that with cable and power, followed by accessories and most recently premium headphones," says head Monster Noel Lee. "Consumers today recognize Monster as one of the leading brands in consumer electronics, with a wide range of offerings.

"Monster is doing the same thing today with our name change that Apple did with Apple Computer. All of this reinforces our vision ‘Because the Music Matters’ which is now part of our slogan. The simplified name is an expression of our continuing, ever-evolving mission.”

The marketing-savvy company has historically been one of the most protective of its brand name and image over the years, with several lawsuits to protect the brand. Under its Monster Cable brand, the company makes audio, video, and data connectivity solutions, and under the Monster Power brand, it provides high-performance AC power line conditioning and protection products for audio/video systems.

Soundcast Launches 3 Source Wireless Audio System

Chula Vista, Calif. - Soundcast Systems, which earlier this year revamped its marketing strategies to control distribution and build margins, has upgraded the capabilities of its OutCast wireless speaker system by improving sound quality, adding connectivity to more sources, and offering more audio zones.

Soundcast's OutCast 3.4 wireless speaker system delivers up to three audio sources simultaneously to multiple zones in a house.

The $1,199-suggested OutCast 3.4 system consists of a powered AC/DC multipurpose speaker, which takes the shape of an upright cylinder with 360-degree dispersion, and a choice of two wireless transmitters, all incorporating wireless 2.4GHz frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology with 300-foot range. One transmitter, called iCast, features an iPod/iPhone dock.

The other transmitter, called the UAT (universal audio transmitter), features a USB port and analog RCA input to connect a PC or traditional audio source, though not both at the same time. Three transmitters can be daisychained to deliver up to three sources simultaneously to up to four different zones, a spokesman said. Up to six transmitters can be daisychained to support eight speakers without drastically reducing range, though only three sources will play simultaneously, the spokesman noted. Additional transmitters cost $249, and additional speakers cost $1,099.

From the buttons on top of an OutCast speaker in each zone, users can select sources, volume, pause, and track up/down, or in the case of Internet music services such as Pandora and Rhapsody, track up/down and station up/down. The OutCast buttons, however, won't remotely turn on the sources.

In addition, consumers can use Apple's free Apple Remote app to control the selection of PC-stored songs from an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

An aux-in back on the OutCast 3.4 speaker also allows for direct connection of a portable audio device.

The speaker is a cylindrical weather-resistant multipurpose powered speaker with 8-inch downward firing woofer, four 3-inch drivers in an omni-directional array, and 100-watt amplification (50 watts to the woofer and 2x25 watts to the other four drivers, rated at 0.1 percent THD from 20Hz-20kHz.

It's 26-inches-tall with top diameter of 10 inches and bottom diameter of 11 inches. Depending on volume levels, it operates for up to 20 hours on the built-in, rechargeable NiMH battery pack, which can be recharged while the speaker plays.

Compared to 1.2-system speakers, the new system features improved drivers, cleaner high frequencies because of an improved codec, indoor and outdoor DSP EQ settings, DSP tuning to match amplifiers with drivers for greater efficiency and audio performance, backlit buttons, and the capability of selecting each Outcast speaker as either a stereo omnidirectional speaker or a dedicated left or right speaker via a single transmitter.

The company's current OutCast 1.2 system also features more limited capabilities. The 1.2 systems use different versions of the iCast and UAT transmitters to stream only source at a time. One transmitter can stream one source to two speakers, and three transmitters can stream one source to up to six speakers.

To prevent one apartment dweller's transmitters from streaming to another apartment dweller's speakers, the 3.4 system transmits more than 68,000 possible channels compared with the 1.2 system, which is limited to three channels.

As of November 1st 2011 Cable Operators must provide our customers self install kits for cable cards and other important changes that will make installation of TiVo’s that much easier.

FCC Cable Card Notice

For those of you that currently use TiVo as a reliable replacement for your current cable company equipment the attached FCC Advisory is very good news.

As of November 1^st 2011 Cable Operators must provide our customers self install kits for cable cards and other important changes that will make installation of TiVo’s that much easier.

A few Key points that will change when dealing with a cable company:

Cable operators must reduce the price of programming packages that include set-top box rentals by the cost of the set-top box rental for customers who use retail devices.

The discounted amount must be no less than the monthly rental fee reasonably allocable to the lease of the operator-suppliedmdevice included in the programming package.

Cable companies must provide a multistream cable card.

Cable Companies must provide users that use Cable Card devices with all of the channels they would receive with a cable company provided box.

Cable operators must price CableCARD rental fees Openly on their web site and in print.

In any professional installation, arrive with the correct number of functioning CableCARDs.

“Permit self-installation of CableCARDs. Cable operators that permit their subscribers to self-install any equipment must also allow subscribers to self-install CableCARDs beginning August 8, 2011. Cable operators that do not currently permit self-installation of any equipment must allow self-installation of CableCARDs beginning November 1, 2011. See 47 C.F.R. § 76.1205(b)(1).”

Liberty AV Solutions Acquires Intelix

Liberty AV Solutions, a division of WESCO Distribution, has acquired Middleton, Wisconsin-based Intelix, a manufacturer of AV components and software.

The move follows a successful conclusion to negotiations between Intelix and WESCO Distribution, Inc. — Liberty’s parent company — to acquire Intelix outright for an undisclosed sum. Liberty joined WESCO in 2006 as part of WESCO’s acquisition of Communications Supply Corporation, of which Liberty is a subsidiary.

Liberty is an audio/visual supplier of solutions-based products ranging from bulk wire and cable to equipment enclosures and mounts to power distribution products and more.

“Intelix has built a fine reputation among AV professionals over the last decade,” said John Dace, who leads the Liberty operation within WESCO. “The company will enable the analog-to-digital transition. Its latest generation of products promise to make the shift to HDMI easier, reliable and more profitable.”

Liberty will bring the full support and service of a global sales force to the task of bringing the entire Intelix catalog to market.

“We are a research and development company first,” said Intelix founder Steve Cohan, who will stay on to guide operations at the company he founded. “We’ll continue to delve deeply into discovering what it takes to make HDMI products work more efficiently. As it has been from the beginning, our goal is to help system designers and integrators adapt to today’s realities as quickly as possible and in a pain-free environment.”

TiVo Unveils New Boxes For Cable Ops

Chicago - TiVo continued to place greater emphasis on products and services targeted at cable operators in unveiling a portion of the company's 2011 product line Monday.

The company's next-generation whole-home solutions adopt access to HD video streaming in two new set-tops for the service provider product family.

These boxes include the TiVo Premiere Q, the company's first quad-tuner gateway set-top box, and the TiVo Preview, its first non-DVR HD set-top box.

Both will join TiVo's existing advanced television solutions offered to cable operators, TiVo said.

The new products enable cable operators to provide a superior advanced television experience to non-DVR households, single-DVR households, as well as multi-room-DVR households, TiVo said.

Both set-top boxes support the full integration of operator services, such as Video on Demand, PPV, CallerID on the TV and linear programming, plus access to broadband applications and services, TiVo said.

The Premiere Q supports a broad range of video on demand content over IP, serving as an advanced video gateway. It will support four simultaneous recordings and the ability to view streaming broadband content, while at the same time supporting up to three HD streams over a MoCA or Ethernet home network.

It is also the only set-top box to integrate a bridge between the MoCA and Ethernet networks to simplify and reduce the cost of installation, allowing the Premiere Q to easily connect to existing home networks.

The TiVo Preview provides the full TiVo user experience for non-DVR households and also functions as a thin client complement to those using a TiVo DVR for multi-room viewing.

Using the Preview, operators can now deploy the TiVo user experience in every room of the home. It fully integrates an operator's linear and VOD content with broadband content and application choices, and immediate streaming access to DVR content from a TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q.

Similar to the Premiere Q, the Preview includes integrated MoCA and Ethernet for home networking and multi-room applications.

TiVo said RCN will be the first domestic cable operator to offer subscribers the Premiere Q and Preview, in addition to its current TiVo Premiere offering.

Suddenlink expects to extend its current TiVo offering through these and other TiVo products.

Warning Issued for Deficient Cat 5e, Cat 6 Cable

In what is described as a new scam, two associations say copper-clad aluminum Category 5e and Category 6 cables are being marketed as solid copper conductors.

In the ongoing effort to educate the structured cabling industry on non-compliant cable products, the Communications Cable and Connectivity Association (CCCA) and the Copper Development Association (CDA) have issued a warning about cable using copper-clad aluminum conductors that do not comply with UL, NEC or TIA codes.

The CCCA has encountered several sources in the U.S. marketing Category 5e and Category 6 communications cables made with copper clad aluminum conductors instead of solid copper conductors. Communications cables made with copper-clad aluminum conductors violate several industry standards, including UL safety standard UL444.

Consequently, such cables made with copper clad aluminum conductors do not have a valid safety listing and cannot be legally installed into areas of buildings which require CM, CMG, CMX, CMR or CMP rated cables.

The CDA also expressed safety and performance concerns over the proliferation of non-compliant copper clad aluminum conductors for certain data cable applications.

The applicable industry standards, which require solid copper conductors for multi-conductor communications cables, are the National Electrical Code (current and older versions), UL 444, and TIA 568C.2.

The National Electrical Code (Section 800.179) states that “Conductors in communications cables, other than in a coaxial cable, shall be copper.” UL 444, Standard for Communications Cable (Section 5.1.1) states that “The conductors shall be solid or stranded, annealed, bare or metal-coated copper.”

UL444 compliance is a basic requirement for any communications cable to receive fire/safety ratings from Underwriters Laboratories or other nationally recognized test laboratories.

The Telecommunications Industry Association’s TIA 568C.2 specification (Section 5.3) requires compliance to ANSI/ICEA S-90-661-2006 and ANSI/ICEA S-102-732 which both include the following language: “Solid conductors shall consist of commercially pure, annealed, bare copper …”

Kevin Ressler, CCCA chairman says: “The use of copper-clad aluminum conductors in cable designs is a relatively new development, so some contractors may be unaware that such cable does not meet the NEC, UL and TIA codes and standards referenced above. Fortunately, copper-clad aluminum conductors can easily be detected by scraping the thin copper surface, exposing the underlying bright aluminum.”

The CCCA points out that the best practice to assure quality cable and network performance is to buy from known brands and quality distributors.

Frank Peri, CCCA’s executive director says, “When dealing with lesser known brands, users should consider asking for complete documentation of product specifications, in writing, to confirm the product meets recognized industry standards. Users should also carefully examine cable for proper marks and labels to show it has been verified or listed by an independent third party such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and/or Intertek/ETL. As an added measure, UL and ETL website directories can also be checked to assure cable manufacturers are in compliance and authorized to display the appropriate mark.”

Epson Unveils ’09 HD Ensemble Home Cinema System Trio

Long Beach, Calif. — Continuing its home-theater development partnership with Atlantic Technologies, Epson America today unveiled three Ensemble HD Home Cinema Systems for the A/V specialty, CE installation channels.

high-performance 3LCD HD front-projection technology.

Atlantic integrates the right, left and front speaker channels into a special 100-inch motorized projection screen that is part of the Ensemble package. The surround speakers are built into the projector’s cradle mount.

“We wanted to create a complete turnkey solution that we could integrate into a home in about four hours, and allow dual use of the room — the screen would retract and fit within the décor,” said Jason Palmer, Epson America home entertainment marketing manager. “With the new upgrades we’ve made into the front projectors in the system, we have really made it an even greater value proposition.”

New this year was a design emphasis on being do-it-yourself friendly, Palmer said.

“We are still selling it through dealers who can install it, but if someone wanted to install it themselves, we have all sorts of tools from videos to manuals that will allow the individual DIY-er to go out and install this system and make it as trouble free as possible,” he said.

“We aren’t changing our distribution strategy for this by adding DIY-friendly capability,” Palmer said. “We’ve just found that there are some videophiles who would rather install systems themselves.”

Each system ships with an A/V controller that connects to the projector via an HDMI cable. The controller houses a built-in DVD player, PixelWorks 1080p up-converting video processor (HQV Reon processing in the flagship 6500 model), AM/FM tuner, iPod/MP3 player port, two HDMI v1.3 inputs and one set of HD component video inputs. In addition, the system ships with a 10-inch subwoofer with 5.1 channels of built-in system amplification, and a circuitry that will optimize the setup for any room environment.

“These are really easy to use, whether it is the DIY-er or a professional installer doing the installation,” Palmer said. “We’ve put these in a number of room environments, so we know some people are going to have higher ceilings and want to put the screen a little bit lower on the wall, and some people are going to have a flat-panel TV on a wall but will want to drop down the screen in front of it to show a big game or event, so they are going to mount the screen about 12 inches out from the wall. If they do that, they are going to want to re-equalize the sound for the room and the way it’s designed.”

To accommodate this, Epson places a Boundary EQ dial on the back of the subwoofer with five settings to accommodate where the projector is placed relative to the screen and surrounding walls.

Systems also ships with mount brackets, 17 meters of HDMI cable, amplifier coupler, an equipment cabinet that houses the subwoofer and a couple of additional components, and an MX350 universal remote control.

Differences between the packages are found primarily in the projectors. This year, Epson is offering two FullHD 1080p models in addition to the entry 720p model.

The new entry Ensemble HD Home Cinema System 720 ($4,999) includes a PowerLite 720 720p HD front projector. Brightness is 1,600 lumens and the contrast ratio is 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

The Ensemble HD Home Cinema System 6100 features Epson’s entry-level 1080p PowerLite Home Cinema 6100 projector at a $6,999 street price. It offers 1,800 ANSI lumens of brightness and 18,000:1 contrast ratio.

The Ensemble HD Home Cinema System 6500 ($7,999) includes Epson’s PowerLite 6500 flagship 1080p projector. It features a 1,600:1 contrast ratio 75,000:1 contrast ratio. The projector was specially designed to retain black-level performance even with some ambient light in the room.

The throw range of the projectors is from 10 feet to 22 feet, offering a lot of installation flexibility, Epson said.

One Pandora App to Tap!

Now Available for iDA-X305S, Pandora has just released an all-in-one “Pandora app” for FREE - Pandora Update, ver. 3.1.3.
"PandoraLink for Alpine" will continue to work on phones that already have it, so let your customers know about the benefits of updating and switching over to the main Pandora app when connected to the iDA-X305S!

With this new Pandora app, your customer will now allow direct control via the iDA-X305S. The "PandoraLink for Alpine" app will remain in iTunes but will eventually be removed from the app store.
This new update is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Multitasking*: The Music Goes On.

Debuting at CEDIA Expo is the newly developed, rack-mountable AVIOR GHMS8044 4x4 HDMI 1.3 Matrix with multi-channel digital audio that connects up to 4 full HD 1080p source devices and routes them to any of four connected HD displays. The 4 HDMI inputs allow devices such as Blu-ray / DVD players, DVR / set-top boxes and media servers to cross switch between devices or split a single source in a mirror mode to up to 4 HDMI equipped HD displays.

The GHMS8044 supports Full HD 1080p with HDCP compliance and Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio for a total high-end matrix switching install solution. Individual sources are accessible for switching, cross switching or setting to mirror mode by convenient front panel pushbutton, IR remote, or by the RS232 port for total professional control.
